[a moment] a comment, and some relics

[moment 203]

We needed to go to Target to pick up a few things. As we were walking toward the registers, a teenager commented to their father in a derogatory tone that we were all wearing masks.

The father's response went something like, "We probably should be, too. But we're idiots. I'm buying some today."

Day after day I hear stories of people who have been incredibly careful to protect themselves from covid and let their guard (and mask) down once and ended up getting it. Of people who thought they were safe at an amusement park or concert because it was outdoors, despite the fact that it was crowded, and were sick within days. Whatever strain is currently out there seems to be highly contagious.

My family will continue to wear masks when we're in public and to limit our activities. For us, with our medical issues, it just isn't worth the risk.

And eventually we'll get rid of the relics of the early days of covid, when cloth masks were said to be effective. We built a collection of them next to our back door and they still live there. Every once in a while I pay attention to their existence, but as of yet, I haven't done anything with them. Perhaps I should figure out some sort of something to make with them.
