[the moment] you understand it's not a choice

[moment 251]

"Homosexuality is a choice."

That's an interesting sentence. It infers that sexuality is a choice. Most people who utter that sentence are those who also believe in a gender binary. So let's explore this a bit more in depth.

If sexuality is a choice and gender is binary, this would mean that human beings are born with the ability to choose whether they're going to be attracted to males or females. If those two options exist, does that mean that we're all born bisexual and remain so until we decide to whom we are attracted?

Of course, not, they say. Because they've been attracted to the opposite sex since they had the ability to be attracted to other people. Meaning they were born that way and did not decide to whom they are attracted.

They can't have it both ways. They can have your sexuality not be a choice and someone else's be a choice. Unless they made the decision not to be attracted to the same sex when they are/were, and to instead be attracted to the opposite sex and that worked for them. But even if it did - deciding to ignore your sexuality doesn't change your sexuality.

Or they assume that heterosexuality is the only right answer and anything else is a choice, which is untrue for most animals, including humans. It's a choice, they still insist. OK. Say I believe that as much as you do. Then why don't you choose to be attracted to the same sex? If it's possible, then do it. Make that choice.

No, they say. I can't make that choice. I'm just not attracted to people whose body parts match mine. If they can't choose to be attracted to someone with the same body parts that they possess, then why would they think someone else could?

Believe it or not, some people are born attracted to people with body parts that match their own body parts. Some are born attracted to people for who they are, regardless of body parts. Some are born without the ability to be attracted to anyone.

Sexuality isn't a choice.
