[a moment] of change

[moment 31]

We now have a bed in every room of our house except the bathroom.

Upstairs there are two bedrooms, each with a bed in it - Austen's room and Eris's room. Mal and Fynn's room is in the basement.

On the first floor of the house is Alex's room; there is a bed in our living room where my husband and I sleep; and now Onyx's bed is in the dining room/kitchen.

We moved Onyx's bed from the room they shared with Eris to the first floor because that's where our main living space and our only bathroom are. Onyx has dysautonomia and has been having increasing issues with dizziness and more currently with syncope - passing out.

As we were deciding what to do about Onyx's need to inhabit the first floor of the house rather than risk going up and down stairs multiple times a day - and possibly at night - we brainstormed different solutions. Change doesn't come easily to some of my children, so changing bedrooms around didn't seem to be a viable option. We thought of walling off a portion of the dining room with a shelving unit and making a mini bedroom. Or buying an ottoman or futon that folds into a bed.

As it would happen, I spent the final months of last year updating the storage in our kitchen/dining room, rearranging and reorganizing, and making room, so when this change became necessary, it was a fairly quick and easy task to accomplish.

It's not the usual set up for a house, but it's what we need to do. My bed being in the living room has been wonderful for my ability to be more accessible to my children on days I'm too ill or in too much pain to be out of bed much. And Onyx's move downstairs will help me keep a closer eye on them, as well as making navigating our house much safer for them.

The rest of the family has taken to this moment of change well. Circumstances and logistics may change again in the future, but for now, I foresee many good memories (with realistically a few frustrations) with this new arrangement.
