13 Shenanigans

It's all Coren's fault.

It is his thirteenth birthday, after all. It is this birthday that caused this to happen. We now have four teenagers, ages 19, 18, 16, and 13. And a ten year old who thinks she's a teenager.

A few weeks before his birthday, Coren made a request for a new bed, choosing a sleeper sofa as his ideal sleeping arrangement. This set off all sorts of shenanigans, as Zephyr and I planned a surprise bedroom makeover birthday present for Coren. The bed Coren wanted was an Ikea bed, so on her day off, Zephyr and I made the journey to Ikea to pick up the bed - complete with a list containing the exact aisle and slot in which to find each piece. Three hours after entering the building, we left with the bed and a couple more items. And a few photos from our three hours of playing with refrigerators and faucets, opening just about every cabinet and drawer in the place, and testing out bedrooms, kitchens, and offices...and maybe a shower or two.

I feel blessed that my children were on board to bring to fruition the birthday surprise for their sibling, along with Finn (the friend, not Alia's new fish), who may have been more helpful than the four other children combined at times. We scrubbed and painted walls, battled with disassembled his old bed and assembled the new sofa bed, vacuumed, rearranged furniture, and got everything ready for the big reveal of a bedroom well-suited to a teenage moondragon. Along the way we learned that not having a set plan of action may not have been the best idea, but it was lots of fun...especially when moving a stubborn and unwieldy bed frame down the stairs and out the back door.

Upon arriving home after a day of ditch digging with Daddy in the morning and Pokemoning all afternoon, Coren was greeted by a gift-wrapped door and the surprise beyond.

He was very surprised, and very much loves his new bed.

Coren has grown a lot over the past year. Not only has he gotten taller, but his maturity and independence have grown as well. Coren played Jack in the original Epoch mini-production, Passengers, designing his own character and helping to write his part. Then he embodied Bentley in the mainstage production, Paper Giants, also at Epoch Arts. Coren competed in his first Magic the Gathering draft tournament, did a bunch of work sanding and staining Gramma and Papa's deck, and has put more effort into nurturing friendships and other relationships. And he gets his Mama coffee (and himself a treat) at the coffee purveyor next to our church when it's just him and I on a Sunday morning, which is both wonderful and tasty. It's wonderful to see him stretching his wings!

Happy 13th Birthday, Moondragon!
